Understanding gum disease

What’s actually happening with gum disease

Gum disease is an infection of the tissue and bone that hold teeth in place. It starts as gingivitis, inflammation caused by plaque bacteria at and below the gumline. At this stage it’s fully reversible.

Left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, where the infection reaches the supporting bone. Bone loss isn’t reversible, but the disease is controllable, and with treatment and maintenance most patients keep their teeth.

Nearly half of adults over 30 have some form of gum disease. It’s often painless and goes unnoticed until a routine exam and cleaning catches it.

Two stages

  • Gingivitis Fully reversible
  • Periodontitis Controllable, not reversible
  • Adults over 30 affected Nearly half

Beyond your mouth

Why gum health matters for your whole body

Research has linked gum disease to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and pregnancy complications. That doesn’t mean gum disease causes them, but chronic gum infection creates inflammation that affects the rest of the body. Treating it is about more than your smile — and another reason not to wait.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I know if I have gum disease?
The most reliable way is an exam. Gum disease is often painless in early stages. Common early signals include bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, and red or swollen gums. If you’ve noticed any of these, it’s worth having your gums evaluated.
Can gum disease be reversed?
It depends on the stage. Gingivitis is fully reversible with professional treatment and consistent home care. Periodontitis involves bone loss and isn’t reversible, but with the right treatment and maintenance it can be controlled and kept from progressing.
Does gum disease treatment hurt?
Scaling and root planing is done with local anesthesia. You’ll feel pressure but not pain. Some tenderness for a few days afterward is normal, and most patients find it easier than expected.
What happens if gum disease isn’t treated?
It progresses. Pockets deepen, bone loss increases, and teeth can eventually loosen and need extraction. Bacteria below the gumline must be removed professionally, so treating it early keeps options open and costs lower.
Does insurance cover gum disease treatment?
Most PPO plans cover scaling and root planing when gum disease is diagnosed. We verify your benefits before treatment so you have a clear cost picture up front.
