What gum disease treatment typically costs

The most common treatment is scaling and root planing (SRP), a deep cleaning that removes bacteria from below the gumline. Cost is calculated per quadrant (the mouth is divided into four sections), and most full-mouth treatments involve two to four quadrants.

These ranges reflect our standard fee schedule before insurance. Early-stage cases may only need one or two quadrants; more advanced cases typically need the full mouth.

Standard fees (before insurance)

  • SRP, per quadrant About $250
  • Full-mouth SRP (4 quadrants) About $1,000
  • Periodontal maintenance, per visit About $89
What affects your cost

What affects your total cost

Number of quadrants

Mild gum disease may need one or two quadrants. Moderate to advanced disease typically needs all four. The exam determines how many.

Severity of disease

More advanced periodontitis may need additional follow-up or, in some cases, a referral to a periodontist.

Your insurance coverage

SRP is a periodontal treatment, not a cosmetic one, so it falls under your dental benefits. We verify coverage before scheduling.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is included. It’s only billed separately if IV sedation or general anesthesia is needed, which isn’t the case for most patients.

Regular vs. deep cleaning

Regular cleaning vs. deep cleaning: the cost difference

The key factor behind coverage is diagnosis. Insurance covers SRP because it’s medically necessary, not elective.

Regular cleaning

Removes plaque and tartar above the gumline for healthy gums, typically twice a year. Most PPO plans cover it at 100%.

Deep cleaning (SRP)

Removes bacteria from below the gumline to treat diagnosed gum disease. Most PPO plans cover a portion, often 50–80%.

FAQ

Common questions about cost

Does insurance cover deep cleaning?
Most PPO plans cover scaling and root planing when gum disease is diagnosed, because it’s a periodontal treatment rather than a cosmetic one. Coverage is typically 50–80% after your deductible. We verify your benefits before scheduling.
How much will I pay out of pocket?
It depends on your plan’s coverage and deductible. For a full-mouth SRP of about $1,000, 80% coverage could mean roughly $200 out of pocket; 50% coverage roughly $500. We verify your actual benefits before treatment.
What if I don’t have insurance?
Treatment is still available. We offer in-house dental memberships plus financing through Cherry, CareCredit and Clerri. Call us and we’ll walk you through the options.
What does ongoing maintenance cost?
Periodontal maintenance visits every 3–4 months are about $89 each before insurance. Most PPO plans cover a portion at a different rate than regular cleanings.
Is it worth the cost?
Untreated gum disease almost always costs more in the long run. If teeth are eventually lost, implants, bridges or partial dentures cost significantly more than early treatment would have.
